Throwback Thursday (8)

This week my throwback is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

You may think it is lame but there was something magical about this book. It speaks louder than a lot of dystopian novels I read today. Instead of the book surging forward off YA love of a boy or girl it thrives off of ones love for written knowledge that can only be brought to us through books. Who doesn't love books? Obviously if you are reading this blog you do! Anyways, I wanted this book to be brought to attention this week for it's beautiful and moving story that created a classic.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden.

Review:

Wow, what to say about Partials. It was moving, innovative, mind-blowing, and so much more. I appreciated the technical aspect of Partials. Dan Wells brought us inside the mind of Kira who is studying to be a nurse where she hopes to find the cure for RM and finally allow the world to have a living baby. 

Dan Wells did an excellent job creating the setting of the novel. I was so wrapped up in how the world fell apart, my heart was beating faster with every new development. I could see everything he said happening in some distant future. The world creating some kind of human look-a-like robots that can see, breathe, and feel like humans, to fight in wars for us. 

I loved Kira, and her bravery. She is the type of character that will never see something wrong happening and ignore it. She steps in and does her best to change it. Which is where tension lies between her and her boyfriend, Marcus. He wants to keep Kira on Long Island, he doesn't care if they cannot have children because they die of RM, he just wants them to live out their lives together in peace. But she refuses to sit by and let the world crumble around them. Whether she has to oppose Marcus, or the entire government she doesn't care she will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. 

I wish I had a piece of Kira power in me. She is a kick-donkey-kong-ass type of character. Like a mega-Buffy, but instead of tackling her opponents with pure force, she destroys with knowledge, science, and her determination to never give up. BOMB-DIGITY! One bonus to this beautiful story is that this is no insta-love story. You know the kind that makes you want to shoot your brains out just to stay away from the slime of love at first sight. It is a slow building web of friendship, trust and similarities between ideologies. Don't get me wrong, Marcus is a great character and cares for Kira a lot, but when you meet Sam, he is completely swoon worthy. Don't worry your pretty little heads about a locked up love triangle either. There really isn't any of that, Kira is a very realistic decision maker, so I trust her not to take us to grossville with an episode of I love him, no I love him. When she makes a decision she is serious about it, and there won't be any turning back. 

Just like you wont turn back after reading this book!

It is the second in the Under the Never Sky Trilogy. The third novel, Into the Still Blue, will be released in January 2014. It seems like a long wait but it will be very worth it. Thank you Veronica Rossi for being a kick but author and giving me great characters to live through!

This week my throwback is Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Now, if you have been living under a rock for the last ten years or so, I suppose I can accept that you have never heard of this book, but for everyone else, if you haven't read it you need to go get a copy now! 

Don't be fooled by the Angelina Jolie look-a-like on the cover, this book, nay, this series, was excellent. And it transferred over to another series, Bloodlines that is well on it's way. It was only published six years ago but for me, the moment I read it, it was an instant classic. Rose is a strong kick-battle-ass character, who takes zero shit from anyone. The VA series will take you on epic journeys, and through the roller coaster ride of love, happiness, struggle and loss as Rose grows into the kind of person you will wish you were cool enough to be [well at least I wish I was cool enough to be] She definitely made me want to be Dhampir. Not to mention this series has my ultimate character love. swoon worthy Adrian... and Dimitri isn't so bad either [TEAM ADRIAN all the way!] I recommend this series with my whole being. In case my words are not enough, here is the Goodreads summary:

This week I am Waiting on The Originals by Cat Patrick

This book was brought to my attention recently and I have been craving it ever since. The biggest bonus is that it comes out in exactly one week! It will be published on May 1st. Now, that is some exciting stuff.

Summary:

17-year-olds Lizzie, Ella, and Betsey Best grew up as identical triplets... until they discovered a shocking family secret. They're actually closer than sisters, they're clones. Hiding from a government agency that would expose them, the Best family appears to consist of a single mother with one daughter named Elizabeth.
